Network Edition Update Notes

There are 2 types of Network Edition updates.   Those that require a Database upgrade and those that don’t.

1 - Updates that require a Database Upgrade:

When we release a myPractice Version that moves the version number from 2.21.x to 2.22.x, the move from ‘21’ to 22’ signifies that there is a database version upgrade required.

What does this mean?

When a database upgrade is required, it means that there have been changes to the database – e.g. new fields have been added to support new functionality.

The myPractice Client program only works with the Database version it is matched to.  If you have database version 21 then the Client must also be version 21.   To use the version 22 Client program, your database must also be at version 22.

The myPractice Installer is designed to connect to your Server to check the Database version before doing anything to prevent a mismatch from happening.  If a mismatch was not caught, you would find yourself unable to use myPractice after finishing your update.

When the Installer detects a Version mismatch between the Server and the Client Software, it will abort the install and you will see a message like this:

Step-by-step instructions on running the Network Update can be found here.  When a Database Upgrade is required, Steps 1 and 2 must be carried out in order.

As of version 2.22 you can download the Network Server Update program from here (You do not have to contact us to arrange your database upgrade as was the case previously)

Once the Server is updated to version 22, the version 21 Clients cannot connect to the Server until they are updated to the matching version.

2 – Updates that do NOT require a Database Upgrade:

When we release a myPractice Version that moves the version number from, say, 2.22.1 to 2.22.2, the move from ‘22.1’ to 22.2’ signifies that the update is within the Client application only and does not effect the Database.

Examples of this are where we release an update that adds additional Reports or other functionality that does not require any Database modification.

These updates can be applied to the Client computers immediately.

Step-by-step instructions on running the Network Update can be found here.  When a Database Upgrade is not required, only Step 2 needs to be carried out. (Note: It won’t ‘break’ anything if Step 1 is done – its just not required)
